BBC: The Domesday Project
In 1986, to celebrate the 900th anniversary of the Domesday Book, the BBC published an interactive project based on laser video disk and a BBC Computer. Originally there were two disks, a National Disk and a Community Disk. The National disc is topic/subject based and provides an overview of Britain. The Community disc shows Britain as photographed and written about by the people who live there. The work we have been doing relates the contents of the community disk. Schools, and community groups, were asked to provide three photographs and 20 pages of text about their sections of the country. |

The subject matter was left up to the contributors, as was the style of writing. This helps to explain some of the curiosities of the content. It provides a fascinating inside and snapshot of the British ways of life. Recently we have extracted the images and text. We are now experimenting with a mobile version of the application, where, if you have a |
suitable phone, we detect (with your permission!) which phone cell you are in, and send you a small selection of photos taken within that cell. You are then challenged to find the original locations, re-photograph them (possibly with your phone camera) and send the pictures back to us. The presenter at Open Day was George Auckland.
